What is this all about?
For over thirty years people have asked me questions about what to expect from the police in certain situations. I have given many of the same answers over and over. I decided it might be useful for people to have a place to seek those answers before they have a cop standing at their door. Or, perhaps the cops have left and you want to know what they meant when they said, “We’ll be back,” or some other innocuous comment.
To get the answers you want you could always go running up to the next police car you see and scream and wave you hands, but in the current cop killing climate we live in, I don’t suggest it. Sure, during the handcuffing at gunpoint, you might get a chance to ask your question but in that circumstance the cop might be inclined to answer, “Who do I look like, Dear Abby?” In the interest of saving as many lives as I can, I am willing to do my best to answer the questions you have.
Remember, I cannot give legal advice, nor would I want to – someone might mistake me for a lawyer and I have my reputation to think about. But, I can give you some general ideas of what to expect and how to succeed in police encounters. Also, keep in mind that every state is different, every city is different, and every cop is different so there are no guarantees. My advice will consist of general principles that I have seen apply the majority of the time from working over 30 years in 5 different states and seven different agencies. If I cannot answer your question, I might be able to steer you in the right direction for an answer.
Also, my ability to get back with you will be dependent on the amount of questions that come in. But anyway, let’s give it a try – click on contact me and fire away. If the question is of universal value I might share it on this website (I will keep it general and leave out any identifying information). If you want to start a general discussion about an issue click on comment (please don’t lower yourself to comment less than family friendly or it will just be removed. But, controversy is okay – not saying I’ll get into every argument that comes along or continue it if it is pointless. Also, remember if you want to get the benefit of the answers that we come up with on this site, sign up for regular email updates. Rest assured I will never share your email with anyone else without your permission.
